The Battle Belongs to the Lord

Why the greatest victories happen when we stop fighting in our own strength

Anchor of the Week

"Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s." – 2 Chronicles 20:15 (NIV)

This Week’s Message

We often think of battles as wars fought on distant battlefields, but most of the battles we face aren’t fought with weapons; they’re fought in our minds, in our relationships, in our decisions, and in the quiet corners of our hearts. Sometimes, the fight looks like trying to fix someone we love, when we were never meant to change them. Other times, it’s wrestling with change itself, resisting it because the unknown feels scarier than staying stuck where we are. I’ll be honest, this past month, actually this past year, has been one of the toughest of my life. And through it, I’ve had to come to terms with a hard but freeing truth: these battles I’ve been fighting are not mine to win. They never were.

The same is true for you. The harder we push, the more resistance we create, trying to force outcomes that were never ours to control. But the moment we surrender — the moment we hand the fight back to God — that’s when peace finds us. Whatever battle you’re facing right now, know this: it belongs to God, not you. Your job isn’t to conquer it, it’s simply to trust God with it.

This week, I want to invite you to listen to one of my meditations — even if meditation isn’t usually “your thing.” Because learning to surrender, even the smallest burden you’re carrying, is one of the most powerful ways to reclaim your peace and joy. This is one of my favorites, and I pray it becomes one of your favorite guides to hand every battle over, for it is safest when placed in God’s hands.

Reflections: Lessons from God’s Battle Plan

2 Chronicles 20:17 (NIV)
"You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you."
This verse is a powerful reminder that not every fight is ours to win. God calls us to stand firm — not force — and trust that He is already at work. Our job is to remain faithful while He brings deliverance in His timing.

2 Corinthians 10:4 (NIV)
“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.”
Our battles are not just physical or emotional — they’re often spiritual. And spiritual battles require spiritual weapons: prayer, scripture, faith, and worship. When we fight with God’s strength instead of our own, we tap into a power that breaks chains and defeats darkness.

Exodus 14:14 (NIV)
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
When we stop striving and start surrendering, we make room for God to move. This verse invites us to rest in the truth that He is fighting for us, even when we can’t see it.

Bible Story: Jehoshaphat’s Battle – Victory Without a Sword

Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, (in 2 Chronicles 20) faced an impossible situation. Three mighty armies had joined forces and were marching toward Jerusalem. The people were terrified, and by human logic, defeat was inevitable. But Jehoshaphat didn’t turn to weapons or military strategy; he turned to prayer.

He gathered the people and cried out to God: “We have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.” (v. 12).

God’s answer was unexpected: “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (v. 15). He instructed them to stand firm and watch His deliverance.

The next morning, Jehoshaphat did something extraordinary—he sent worshipers ahead of the army, singing praises to God. As they worshiped, God set ambushes against the enemy, causing confusion and defeat without Judah ever lifting a weapon.

This story shows us what happens when we stop doubting the power of God and start surrendering. God’s great power is released when we trust Him enough to step aside. Jehoshaphat’s victory wasn’t the result of strength; it was the result of surrender.

How to Surrender Your Battles to God

When life feels like a battlefield, here are some ways to step aside and let God take command:

1. Start with Prayer – Lay it all before Him. Name your fears, your burdens, and your battles out loud.
2. Replace Your Worries with Worship – Like Jehoshaphat, praise God in advance for the victory you can’t yet see. Believe that God has the power to handle it.
3. Speak Scripture Over the Situation – Declare His promises out loud to remind your spirit who’s in charge.
4. Stop Trying to Control the Outcome – God’s timeline almost always will not match yours, but His plan is always better.
5. Keep Your Eyes on Him – As Jehoshaphat said, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”

In Closing

Life’s battles are inevitable, but we must realize that they were never meant to be fought alone. God doesn’t need your strength; He desires your surrender. And when you place the fight in His hands, you’ll find that His victory is far greater than anything you could achieve on your own.

So this week, take a deep breath and release what’s been weighing you down. Speak the words, “Lord, this battle is Yours.” Then stand firm in belief and watch Him move. God’s power is beyond anything we can comprehend, and once we give it to the Almighty, peace will soon settle in where the fear once lived.

Let’s pray

Father, I surrender the battles I’ve been trying to fight on my own. I lay down my fear, my control, and my striving. Teach me to trust You more deeply and to rest in the assurance that You are fighting for me. Help me to stay still, to worship while I wait, and to keep my eyes fixed on You. I believe the victory belongs to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I’m so grateful you’re here. God bless and I’ll see you here next Sunday ❤️🙏🏻
